The Department of Energy's overarching mission is to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States; to promote scientific and technological innovation in support of that mission; and to ensure the environmental cleanup of the national nuclear weapons complex. The Department is a major participant in the U.S. Climate Change Science Program and the U.S. Climate Change Technology Program. The Department’s climate research is designed to improve the modeling of climate change, understanding and modeling of the effects of clouds on the Earth’s radiative energy budget, and the understanding and modeling of the effects of atmospheric aerosols on climate.
